EcoVolt Electric

Battery energy storage for Ontario businesses

Buy electricity during off-peak hours (low cost rate). Use it during peak times (high cost rate).

A battery does not generate power, it changes when you pay for it. Charge overnight at low rates, discharge through the expensive afternoon peaks, shave your demand charges and, when designed for backup, keep critical loads running when the grid fails.

For commercial, industrial and institutional facilities in Ontario.

The assessment models your consumption profile against real Ontario rates. No cost, no obligation for the assessment.

One battery, three ways it pays

Energy arbitrage. On time-of-use pricing, overnight electricity can cost 5-10 cents per kWh while peak afternoon power runs 19 cents or more. The battery buys low and delivers high, typically covering the 3-4 most expensive hours every weekday. Larger facilities see reduced demand charges and Global Adjustment penalty reduction or elimination.

Demand charge reduction. Your utility bills you for your single largest consumption period of the month. The battery monitors and reduces that large consumption period, every month. This reduction reduces utility costs monthly.

Backup power. Designed for backup, the battery carries your critical loads when the grid drops. No spoiled inventory, no dead production line, no restart costs.

night afternoon peak evening battery charges battery powers the building
A weekday on time-of-use pricing: the battery charges overnight and carries the building through the afternoon peak.

Battery and system monitoring software tracks and provides data showing the real time operation of the system. Monthly reporting and performance metrics are accessible to the client.

Does your facility peak above 500 kW?

For facilities that peak above 500 kW or meet the IESO consumption threshold, the biggest battery opportunity is not arbitrage, it is Ontario's Global Adjustment charge. For qualifying facilities, peak reduction has provided client savings from $300,000 to over $1,000,000 each year at recent GA levels.

Plus: outage protection for critical loadsavoided downtime

Battery economics stay linked to grid rates, since charging still buys real electricity. The assessment models your rates, your load profile and your utility's demand charges, and shows the calculated total cost savings.

$0 upfront: the savings pay for the system, the savings in the PPA pay for the system over the term.

For eligible battery projects, EcoVolt finances, installs, owns and maintains the system on a shared-savings basis. It is paid for out of the Global Adjustment savings it creates over a 15-year term, you keep your share of the savings from day one, and you invest nothing.

Prefer to own it outright? You keep 100% of the savings plus the federal tax credit of up to 30%, with a yearly maintenance contract available. We price ownership in every assessment, and financing wherever your project qualifies.

Financing requires ownership of the building. The savings come from the elimination or reduction of Global Adjustment penalties. A shared savings model suits Class A facilities where EcoVolt retains a percentage of the cost savings to pay for the system. At the end of the term, you can buy the system at fair market value.

Where batteries create the most value.

Manufacturing plant with battery storage containers

Manufacturing

Heavy peaks, real demand charges, and Global Adjustment exposure above 500 kW. The strongest case in Ontario.

Refrigerated warehouse with trucks at the loading docks

Cold storage and food

Refrigeration never takes a break. Batteries cap the demand peaks and protect inventory through outages.

Commercial greenhouse complex lit up at dusk

Greenhouses

Lighting loads meet a dedicated Class A opt-in tier for greenhouse operations from 500 kW up.

Commercial building with rooftop solar and battery cabinets

Solar owners

Already have panels? Storage turns midday surplus into evening savings and outage protection.

Projects we have built

Battery storage cabinets at the North Caicos microgrid

1 MW / 4 MWh battery, island microgrid

Battery phase of local utility's North Caicos microgrid: our crew delivered interconnection wiring, battery and inverter installation support, and communications cabling and testing, and supported Hitachi and the client through commissioning.

3.6 MW / 7.2 MWh, Woodstock

EPC contractor, for the battery system at Tier 1 Canadian manufacturing plant, online July 2026. We worked through Hydro One, fire and building department requirements all the way to commissioning.

"EcoVolt took ownership of these issues, worked diligently with the relevant authorities, and developed practical solutions that allowed the project to continue progressing toward successful completion."
Scott McBrayne, Chief Operating Officer, Peak Power, on the Vuteq battery project
"Compass Solar would have no hesitation in engaging EcoVolt again on future solar, storage and microgrid projects."

Questions facility managers ask about batteries

Is a big lithium battery safe at our facility?

Systems are UL 9540 listed with UL 9540A thermal test data, sited to NFPA 855 requirements, and every Ontario installation is ESA inspected. All installations are exterior to the building. We review the project with the fire marshal and ensure proper documentation and permitting as part of the project.

How long do the batteries last?

Manufacturer warranties typically run 15 years, and peak-shaving duty is light compared to what these cells are built for. We design with degradation headroom and an augmentation plan, so year-15 performance is engineered in, not hoped for.

How much space does it need?

Minimal space is required. Batteries typically come in 20' containers, based on interconnection voltages, transformer and inverter needs, a flexible layout can be designed based on site conditions.

Who decides when it charges and discharges?

The control system is designed to automatically charge and discharge to maximize your savings, using your rate schedule, your live load and price signals. Nobody on your team has to think about it, and you see everything in the monitoring portal.

Can it really run the building in an outage?

The size of the battery energy storage system is designed according to the facilities needs and can accommodate the load for a building outage if required. Paired with solar, it can recharge during daylight and extend through longer outages.

What if electricity rates change?

Arbitrage earnings track the spread between off peak (low grid cost) and peak hours (high grid cost), and that spread has been widening as Ontario's demand grows. The spread savings will always be present during these rate changes if the electricity costs increase.

Who qualifies for $0-upfront battery financing?

For eligible projects, in a building you own. The model is a shared savings on Global Adjustment, so it fits Class A facilities. EcoVolt owns and maintains the system for the 15-year term, and at the end you can buy it at fair market value. Smaller systems are usually best owned outright with the federal tax credit of up to 30%.
